About your teacher

Hi! My name is Yael Shy, I’m an award-winning author and CEO of the industry-leading Mindfulness Consulting. I have been featured on Good Morning America, CBS News and in Time Magazine and the Harvard Business Review. In addition to my workshops and individual clients, I consult for major corporations and universities, including Proctor and Gamble, Columbia University, and NYU.  Deeply passionate about the transformative power of mindfulness, I have over 20 years of practice experience in Zen, Jewish, and secular meditation contexts.

Why I do this:

Meditation changed my life when I was 19 years old and my anxiety had grown so out of control I was having 2-3 full-fledged panic attacks per week. Social anxiety kept me from making friends, dating or going to gatherings without the excessive use of alcohol and drugs, and yet I was terribly lonely.  I never thought I could find a way out of my pain. Through mindfulness, meditation and therapy, I did. Although I still get anxious and lonely, these emotions no longer control my life or stop me from connecting with others or taking risks. It is now my life’s purpose to support others to uncover their inherent worth and capacity for deep joy through mindfulness.

CHOOSE JOY CURRICULUM

  • You will explore the WHY behind your decision to sign up for this program and let it motivate you to design and commit (or re-commit) to a meditation/journaling practice path over the next few weeks to nurture and support your growth.

  • You will learn how to create space around anxious thoughts and stories by dropping into the body and the senses. These somatic practices will bring more ease in times of stress and panic, as well as retrain the mind to perceive pleasure and joy more regularly in daily life.

  • You will unpack some of the building blocks of suffering and anxiety in your life. These include pushing away that which you don’t like (and grasping things you do), denying change, and believing that you are separate and alone. You will look inward to see where you engage with these painful mental processes, and begin to use the transformative power of accepting and allowing in order to experience more ease and freedom.

  • You will learn how to process difficult emotions, such as anxiety and overwhelm, without repressing them or being overrun by them. You will learn the liberating method called RAIN (Recognize, Allow, Inquire, Nourish) and apply it to your life.

  • You will map joy in your life and explore the Buddhist conceptions of joy as happiness vs joy as ease. You will identify the full range of practices and approaches that open YOU up to joy, rather than anxiety, in any given situation. You will also be guided through a reflective closing exercise to chart you course to more learning and growing.

Are these teachings based in a specific tradition or lineage?

Much of what Yael teaches has Buddhist roots, filtered through her Jewish meditation experience, but you certainly do not have to be Buddhist or Jewish (or any religion or background at all) to participate! These teachings are accessible and clear with no confusing jargon or previous experience required.
